Where the Children Are (Missing)

A report in today's Winston-Salem Journal ("Lead Tests Not Done") should indicate that momentum is building for increased testing for lead in the blood of one- and two-year-old children. Although the report reflects only mandated testing for children receiving Medicaid benefits, every parent and grandparent should insist that their toddlers be tested for lead, regardless of their economic status.

  1. The article draws attention to the unweildy protocols used in some pediatric practices. A one-stop visit would enhance testing rates. But some practices refer patients to labs in other locations. Just image how easy it would be, as a parent managing one toddler and maybe one or more children, to decide to postpone the test and to leave instead -- factor in the fact that this parent may be using public transportation in Winston-Salem -- not an easy combination.

    User friendly protocols are needed.
